More than any other question, I am always asked by my clients what they should wear to their family sessions. what you wear sets the tone for your pictures, so choosing your outfits can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. The most important thing to remember is that you should reflect on your own personal style, you should feel comfortable and wear what makes you feel good.
I hope this information helps you, please keep in mind that I'm here to answer any questions or even give you inspiration if you need it, I'm just a call or an email away.
"What to wear? "
1. Always feel comfortable
The most important thing to remember is that your clothing should reflect your personal style, you should feel comfortable and wear something that makes you genuinely confident and happy. If you feel good you will look good! Choose clothing that gives you freedom of movement and won't require a lot of maintenance throughout your session.
2. Consider you home décor
When picking a colour scheme please bear in mind that these colours will be the colours displaying on your wall, so you would like your images to match with the interior of your house.
3. Pick the colours first
its recommend that you start by selecting a base of 2-3 colours and carry those through the outfit so that everything "goes" together but doesn't match, keep in mind that the colours you choose for each family member do not have to match but they should look nice and compliment each other, you don't want everyone looking the same, Mix neutrals with some accent colours, neutral's create a soft and elegant style and will give your image a timeless feel.
4. Consider your location
Always keep your session location in mind when choosing your outfits, you don't want to blend into the background , and I would recommend you dress in a way that's appropriate for your location.
For example a natural relaxed family session down by the beach, I would recommend light summer clothes and bare feet would be perfect!
5. Layers, patterns and textures.
Layers are one of the best ways to add a pop of colour or variety to your outfit, consider throwing on a cardigan or a jacket over a dress, add a scarf or even throw on a belt, for the boys think blazers, hats and bows, Don't be scared of patterns or prints they can be great in moderation, patterns can actually make your wardrobe less boring and add some interest into your photos, when choosing patterns look for small simple designs in soft or neutral colours, stay away from loud patterns and prints, as I stated before, and also please say no to character t-shirts Etc to create a more timeless look, (unless that is the look your going for) Textures are great too think, lace, ribbons, ruffles and embroidery.
6. Accessorize
You can really play up an outfit and add personality and interest to your photo with Accessories, but keep it simple! Hats and scarfs which are easily exchangeable can add touches to the photos, fresh florals can also add a really romantic feel and look for you and your little ones. and it also gives the kids something to play with.
I hope this style guide has helped you to be able to get the most out of you family photo session and you can now have the most beautiful images that will last a lifetime
